So how we can modify an already running file?
Generally, Windows won’t let you delete/modify/rename any file that is already running in the task manager. normally you would get the name of this file and look for it in the task manager then end it easily. But what if Windows didn't tell you about where this file is opened exactly or which program has locked this file, a program or a background process may have finished with a file but didn't unlock it properly when it's done. for example, this picture shows what Windows will tell you.
Windows can tell you also this different sentences like ...
- The action can't be completed because the file is open in System.
- The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer.
- Cannot delete file: Access is denied.
- There has been a sharing violation.
Here windows tells you where the file or program is opened, but system and windows explorer are system files.
Note: Using task manager to end processes like system.exe or any system files can lead to unwanted system failures or blue screen of death so be careful.
1 - LockHunter - a foolproof file unlocker
Lockhunter is a free software to delete files blocked by something you do not know. Lockhunter is useful for fighting against malware, and other programs that are blocking files without a reason. Unlike other similar tools, it deletes files into the recycle bin so you may restore them if deleted by mistake.
How to use it?
First, we should locate the file that we are trying to delete (obviously) and right click on it, the context menu will open up.
Now Click on "What is locking this folder?" a detailed window will then open with information about what is locking your file.
then click on Unlock It! option, a warning message will open, make sure that this file doesn't contain any work you've done before clicking Yes. Now the software will unlock your file, you can then choose to delete this file from the software button or choosing to delete it in the next system start or unlock and rename from More button or exit.
